Tuesday, August 11: EMERGENCY ORDER: Little Susitna River Silver Salmon Bag and Possession Limit Reduced to 1 Fish
Summary: By emergency order, the bag and possession limit for silver salmon in the Little Susitna River is being reduced from 2 down to 1 fish due to a weak return this season. The order takes effect Saturday, August 13. As of Tuesday, August 11, the number of silvers passed through the weir on the lower river stands at some 3,250 fish; the minimum sustainable escapement goal is 9,200. At current rate of passage through the weir, the total seasonal escapement is projected to be 7,400 fish. Additional restrictions may follow if the run does not improve.

The order is to provide protection of silver salmon that are returning to the river in well below average numbers. Based on historic run timing, the anticipated total escapement is projected to be less than 6,600 fish; the minimum sustainable escapement goal is 9,200.

Summary: By emergency order, the bag limit for pink salmon in Port Valdez saltwater is being increased from 6 to 12 fish per day (and 24 in possession) effective Saturday, August, and continues through December 31. The Solomon Gulch Hatchery and the seine fleet have attained their goals with large numbers of surplus salmon available, thus allowing for additional opportunity for anglers to harvest fish. As a reminder, the other salmon species present in the port retain their current regulatory bag and possession limits.

Summary: By emergency order, fishing with bait and multiple hooks will be prohibited in the Kenai River starting Saturday, August 1, through August 15. The order is to provide additional protection of late-run king salmon still entering the river through the first half of August. The late-arriving kings are often hooked by anglers targeting silver salmon using bait and lures with multiple hooks. The run of king salmon is severely lagging in numbers this season and thus an emergency order is warranted.

Summary: By emergency order, red salmon fishing throughout the Copper River drainage will close to fishing this coming Monday, August 3. The order remains in effect through the season ending on December 31. Overall, runs of red salmon have been substantially lower than average this year and the Miles Lake sonar confirms that number of fish coming up the river warrants the fishery to shut down. The dip net fishery is also ordered shut down through the month of August.

Thursday, July 2: EMERGENCY ORDER: Russian River Sanctuary Closes for Sport Fishing
Summary: By emergency order, the Russian River sanctuary will close to all fishing starting Friday, July 3, through Tuesday, July 14. This order aims to help conserve a relatively weak return of early-run red salmon to the Russian River; to date, a total of less than 15,000 fish have been counted through the ADF&G weir at the Lower Russian Lake outlet, well short of the 22,000 minimum escapement goal. The sanctuary, or the larger confluence perimeters of the Russian and Kenai rivers, is a critical staging area for salmon heading up the Russian and a point where fish can easily be targeted. With an estimated 2,500 reds moving up the Russian River towards the weir and additional fish arriving from the Upper Kenai River, it is likely that the minimum escapement will be met before the July 14 regulatory end of the “early” run of red salmon.

Nine year old Liyanella of Anchorage brought the fish in on the late afternoon tide and thus winning the prize for the first Ship king of the year courtesy of The Bait Shack. It weighed 10.45 pounds and was taken on a Spin-N-Glo and cured salmon roe setup.

February 26: King Salmon Restrictions in the Susitna River Drainages
Summary: Effective May 1 through the remainder of the king salmon season ending July 13, Unit 2 of the Susitna River drainage will be closed to fishing for king salmon, including catch-and-release. The roadside streams of Willow, Little Willow, Kashwitna, Sheep, and Montana are situated within Unit 2 and therefore closed to king salmon fishing. Other species, however, may be targeted in these waters during this time.

Thursday, January 2: ADF&G Emergency Order: Eastside Cook Inlet Beaches Remain Closed to Sport Clamming in 2020
Summary: By emergency order, all Eastside Cook Inlet beaches will remain closed to sport and personal use clamming again in 2020 due to the continued low abundance levels of mature razor clams. Affected area runs from the mouth of Kenai River to the southernmost tip of the Homer Spit, including the beaches of Clam Gulch, Ninilchik, Deep Creek, and Anchor Point. The cause of previously low abundance remains unknown but evidence is that populations are on the rebound. This closure does not affect clamming on the Westside Cook Inlet beaches (Polly Creek, etc.).
